Rock Wilk:

When I was 6 years old, my first grade teacher asked everyone in my class to write down something that was important to us, and told us that she was going to include what we wrote with our class picture. That way, she said, we could go back and look at our picture years later and get an idea of what we were thinking about as 6 year olds. So most of the kids wrote "Girls stink", or "I want to be a fireman when I grow up", but I wrote, "I am a person and so are you". My teacher looking puzzled, asked me what I meant by that. I told her that I thought that everyone should be treated the same, and I noticed that she was pretty mean to a girl in our class who happened to be fat. I thought it was just because she was fat. I told her that I also noticed that everytime something happened in our class, she would blame a friend of mine. [who happened to be African American]. I told her that I thought it was because he was black. She told me I had to wait after school. I believe at that point I was thinking, "Uh Oh, I should have mentioned that I also wanted to be an astronaut. Probably would have worked better for her." Next thing I know I'm in the principals office, and my mother is on the way down to my school. My mother arrives and here I am sitting in the principals office, thinking I'm in BIG trouble. So my teacher tells the story to my mother and the principal and then she begins to cry. Now I'm thinking I'm in REALLY BIG TROUBLE. But she says, "Mrs. Wilk, your son is right, I have been treating these children differently, but I can assure you and the principal that I won't continue to do so." True story, and it greatly impacted my life. I was very fortunate to have had a teacher actually acknowledge me as a young child, and it stuck with me throughout my life. It freed me to speak my mind, and for that I thank my first grade teacher, Miss Zive. Eventually, I named my music publishing company "IAmAPerson&SoRU" {ASCAP}, trying to put that message "out there" as much as I can.

Alot of people ask me how I got the name "Samah" for my production company. It's not a very interesting story. As a baby, I just couldn't say "Grandma" and so it came out "Samah". It happens that my Grandmother and I had a very special bond, so I wanted to honor her and thus, the name Samah for my production company. Interestingly, I have found over the years, thru various emails from all over the world, that Samah is actually an Arabic word that means "forgiveness", or "to forgive" as well as being a popular Middle Eastern name for a girl. I have received emails from Barain, Marrakech, Jordan, Belgium, Algeria, Canada, even Detroit, all from women named Samah. Each person was very spiritual in her own way when talking about her name, and now the moniker for my production company means more to me. "To Forgive" is one of the most important things we can all live by, so I feel very fortunate that I had a language problem as a child and blurted out such an important name for my Grandmother, and eventually my Production company.
I guess the most important thing you need to know about me is that I will continue to try and do work that makes an impact on people. Whether it's just good music that makes you feel good, or music with a message, I'm trying to make my contribution to others any way I can. My message is always "IAmAPerson&SoRU" and I'm proud to get that message out there through Samah Productions.
Let's keep in touch.
Peace
Rock
